Tyring to check your marital status in South Africa can prove to be challenging. A few years ago, as part of the ‘Check Your Marital Status’ campaign, the Department of Home Affairs launched an online marriage verification service. This was implemented because of the increased number of fraudulent marriage registrations in the country. South Africans were marrying foreigners to get work and residence permits in South Africa.
There was an online service as well as an SMS service where you could send the letter M and your ID number to 32551. It was suggested that you will receive your marital status directly to your cellphone via SMS.
Needless to say, these services stopped working not long after they were launched, leaving people in limbo. The only other option was to go to the DHA office closest to you and wait (and wait and wait and wait) in line.
However, many people aren’t aware of the fact that you can easily get the status of your marital affairs without having to go to the DHA. Doc Assist can help you check your marital status and get a letter of non-impediment from home affairs on your behalf. A letter of no impediment is a letter issued by the Department of Home Affairs stating your marital status.
How Can I Check My Marital Status in South Africa Online?
While there isn’t exactly a system in place to check your marital status or someone else’s online in South Africa, there is a way to sidestep going to the Department of Home Affairs.
One reason for people wanting to check their marital status or requiring a letter of no impediment is because they intend to get married abroad. Often, this letter will need to be apostilled by an authority like Dirco. At Doc Assist, we can apply for this letter on your behalf and we can have it apostilled for you.
If you’ve already applied for the letter of no impediment we can help you with the legalisation process. We will need the following information when you fill in the quote request form:
- The country you need the document to be legalised for
- The country we need to return it to
- The original letter of no impediment
- Whether you need the letter of no impediment to be legalised or simply need a notarized copy
