Getting Married? Here’s What You Need to Know
Getting married is one of life’s biggest moments — but it also comes with paperwork. A marriage certificate is more than a piece of paper. It’s your legal proof of marriage, and you’ll need it for everything from updating your ID to applying for visas, home loans, and tax benefits. Let’s walk through the process together so you can move forward with clarity.
What Is a Marriage Certificate and Why Is It Important?
A marriage certificate is the legal record of your marriage, issued by the Department of Home Affairs after a legally recognized marriage ceremony. It’s proof that your marriage was registered in South Africa, and it’s needed for legal, financial, and immigration purposes. Without it, your marriage might not be officially recognized.
Step 1: Get Married by a Registered Marriage Officer
The first step is making sure your marriage is performed by someone legally allowed to do so — a registered marriage officer. This can be a religious leader, a magistrate, or an officiant registered with Home Affairs. After the ceremony, you’ll sign the marriage register — and that’s where the paperwork begins.
Step 2: Immediate Certificate vs. Official Certificate
Right after your ceremony, you’ll receive a handwritten certificate called a BI-27. This is your temporary proof of marriage. But it’s not the official Home Affairs-issued marriage certificate. To get the official version (which is needed for most legal purposes), you’ll need to apply separately — and that’s where many people get stuck or delayed.
How to Apply for the Official Marriage Certificate
You can apply at any Department of Home Affairs office by submitting:
- A completed Form BI-130
- A copy of your ID and your spouse’s ID
- Your original BI-27 certificate
- Proof of payment (about R75–R100)
Processing times vary, but it can take up to 8 weeks — sometimes longer. That’s why many couples use services like Doc Assist to help avoid errors, delays, or multiple trips back and forth.
Can You Apply for a Marriage Certificate Online?
Unfortunately, not yet. Unlike passports and ID renewals, marriage registration still requires in-person submission at Home Affairs. However, you can use an approved document service to handle everything on your behalf — from collecting forms to submitting and following up. This is especially helpful if you’re outside the country or simply tired of Home Affairs queues.
